What Love!

"Not only saints, but even men who do not know the Lord have patiently suffered the most atrocious pains, but in Jesus, with his infinite pains, there was a secret, inner pain that we are unable to penetrate. It is the pain of carrying alone the weight of our sins before the holy God--he the innocent for us the guilty. It is the pain of finding himself as if separated by them for a moment (though I scarcely dare to touch on the mystery), separated for a moment from love of the Father (if one can speak in these terms) though remaining one with him, and forced to cry out, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' Why does he suffer thus? For you, sinner, for you. And he loved you so much that if there were none but you to save on earth, he would have entered his Gethsemane for you. What love, my God, what love!"
